Can You Spot the Error? Part 01

Chances are high that, as a reader of this blog, you frequently notice grammar or spelling mistakes out in the wild. See how many errors you can spot in these examples.

Nobody at the publishing company caught that the word “Jeep” was used instead of “deep.” Remember to proofread your work before publishing! See the post Copyediting vs. Proofreading for more details.

The first word in the subject line should be “You’re” (“You are”), not “Your.” For more information please see the post on Apostrophes

Because this is a joke about eggs, it should be spelled “yolk,” not “yoke.” Remember that electronic editors won’t catch misused words like this. For more information please see the post on Why Human Editors are Still the Best.

There should not be an apostrophe in “special’s.” Apostrophes should not be used to denote multiples. For more information please see the post on Apostrophes.

That’s an em dash when it should be an en dash. En dashes are the ones that go between dates. For more information please see the post Know Your Dashes.

If somebody proofread the article title, they missed the “peak” typo. Like with egg yoke above, electronic editors won’t catch this mistake. For more information please see the post on Why Human Editors are Still the Best.

Like with the cocktail specials above, there is a misused apostrophe. For more information please see the post on Apostrophes. BONUS: did you also notice the misspelling? When writing chalk signs, have someone review before making it public.

“Success” is misspelled. See the post Copyediting vs. Proofreading for more details.

Another misused apostrophe, Right at the top! The other two apostrophes are correct. For more information please see the post on Apostrophes.

In the third line, the word should be “whose,” not “who’s.” “Who’s” is a contraction of “who is,” so it doesn’t make sense here. For more information, check out this post on commonly confused words.

That dash between the years should be an en dash and not a hyphen. For more information please see the post Know Your Dashes.
